Susan Smith Murrell was called home to the Lord on Saturday December 3rd, 2022 at the age of 88. She was born in Parkersburg, West Virginia to Blanche and Richard Smith. She grew up in Huntington, attending Huntington High School and receiving her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in teaching from Marshall University. She was a charter member of the Alpha Delta Kappa sorority there.
Susan married Jonathan Murrell in Hawaii where he was stationed during his service in the Navy. They returned to Huntington and both graduated from Marshall University. They then moved to Waverly, Ohio where she taught school for thirty-two years, nearly all in the sixth grade.
Susan is survived by her two daughters, Susan Murrell (spouse Henk) and Linda Gross (spouse Jeff). She has eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Susan enjoyed playing the piano for family, school events and church choirs. She was active in her sorority and enjoyed playing bridge. She was in several bridge clubs, one with friends for over forty years. Susan taught Sunday school in Waverly and also volunteered at the First United Methodist Church. She loved traveling, taking cruises and flying all around the world. She even enjoyed line dancing for a few years.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon Wednesday December 7th, 2022 at the First United Methodist Church. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 11:00 until the time of the service. Private burial will be in Huntington, W. Va. Memorial contributions may be offered to an organization of one's choice, Susan's choices were her church, veterans and animal shelters.
The family thanks King's Daughters Home for the wonderful care they provided Susan and thanks the staff and members of the First United Methodist Church for the caring home visits over the years.
