Russell J. Thomas, age 86 of Midland, passed away Friday, March 5, 2021 at home with his family by his side. The son of the late Russell and Blanche (Rau) Thomas was born November 20, 1934 in West Branch where he was raised and educated. Russell served his country honorably during the Korean Conflict with the U.S. Navy. Afterwards, he went on to work as a pipefitter with Dow Chemical Company for 34 years, retiring in 1989. Russell will always be remembered for the deep love he had for his family. He never met a person who he didn’t like and always had a keen sense of humor. Russell was a member of the K of C Bay City Council 414 and the American Legion Post 165 in Midland. He enjoyed being outdoors with his favorite hobbies being fishing and hunting.
Surviving is his loving partner of 14 years, Darlene Woodcock and her children; his children, Gary (Sally) Thomas of Gladwin, David (Kim) Thomas of Midland, and Diana (Terry) Bushre of Sanford; step daughter, Trisha (David) Fenby; 3 grandchildren, 5 step grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren; sister, Doris Jean (Tom) Myers. In addition to his parents, Russell was preceded in death by his brothers, Tony, Dick, Bob Thomas and sister Margaret (Bob) McGrail.
The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Friday, March 12, 2021 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with Fr. Rob Howe as celebrant. Family will receive friends on Friday at the church only from 10:00 am until the time of service. Face masks will be required and social distancing guidelines will be followed. Memorial contributions in Russell’s name may be offered to American Legion Post 165, 5111 Hedgewood Dr. Midland, MI 48640.
