Robert Roland Bernard, 90 of Midland, was called to heaven by our Lord on Saturday, March 20, 2021.
Bob was born in Bay City on August 30, 1930 to the late Irene (Picardy) and Howard Bernard. He married the love of his life Mary Arlene Putnam on April 14, 1956. Bob was a servant in all aspects of his life. He especially enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, and playing cards with family and friends. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War
He was a Special Olympic parent who was actively involved in the program for 38 years. Besides being a volunteer coach, Bob also served as a chaperon, chauffeur, and a father figure to many of the athletes as he considered them all family. Bob received the Michigan Special Olympic Coach of the year award in 1983.
He will be deeply missed by his wife, Arlene Bernard of Midland, his children James Bernard of Midland, Caroline (Bruce) McLennan of Fort Worth, Texas. His grandchildren Gregory (Bethany) Maness, Alyssa Maness, and Sawyer (Allison) Maness and his great granddaughters Leighton Grace and Reese Meredith Maness, sister Jane (Larry) Curler of Sanford, sister in law Edna Bernard of Missouri and many beloved nieces, nephews and friends. Bob was predeceased by his three brothers Richard, Thomas, and Russell Bernard.
Funeral Services will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 27, 2021 at St. Brigid Catholic Church with burial to take place in Midland Memorial Gardens with full military honors. The family will receive friends at the church at 10 a.m. prior to the services.
