Michael John Uhl Sr., 72, of Sanford, MI went to be with the Lord on July 14, 2022, after a long illness. The son of John and Catherine (Myer) Uhl Jr., Mike was born in Grayling, MI on March 3, 1950.
Mike attended Beaverton Public Schools. The Uhl family initially lived on Dale Rd. in Tobacco Township, but then moved to Croll Rd. in Buckeye Township. The woods of Beaverton, along with the waters of the Little Cedar River and Ross Lake, were the genesis of his love for the outdoors.
Following school, Mike ventured to Livonia, MI for employment at General Motors. Not long after, he enlisted in the US Army to serve in Vietnam. Mike returned from Vietnam as a decorated combat veteran with a rank of Sergeant (E-5). Back from Vietnam and again working at GM, Mike married Marilou (Clark), also of Beaverton, on June 17, 1972, in Gladwin, MI. They celebrated 50 years of marriage this past June.
The Uhl family’s journey with GM went from Livonia (Detroit/Wayne/Redford) to Saginaw (Sanford/Coleman) to Grand Rapids (Grant) to Spring Hill, TN (Lewisburg). Ultimately, Mike retired in TN within GM Skilled Trades as a Journeyman Carpenter. A few years later, Mike & Marilou returned to Michigan where they have lived for the last 20+ years. In retirement, Mike remained an avid hunter, fisherman and woodworker. He was a longtime member of the Sanford First Baptist Church, American Legion, United Auto Workers, and Disabled American Veterans. Above all, Mike loved his family and friends and they loved him.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, John (1996) & Catherine (2009), his brother, Dennis (1974) and several dear friends and family members. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marilou Uhl, his two sons, Michael (Carrie) Uhl of Commerce Township, MI, and Mark (Danielle) Uhl of Lewisburg, TN, his brother, Kenneth (Barbara) Uhl of Beaverton, MI along with his grandchildren; Bailey, Lauren, Anna, Leah, Brayden and Gerrit.
Public visitation will be held on Friday, July 22, 2022, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the Wilson Miller Funeral Home, 4210 N Saginaw Rd, Midland, MI 48640. A service, including military honors, will be conducted immediately following the visitation (3:00PM – 3:30PM). Clarence Sova of the Sanford First Baptist Church will be officiating the service. Mike will be laid to rest at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, MI.
In lieu of flowers, the Uhl family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Sanford First Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 517, Sanford, MI 48657.
