Frances Putney Hamburg

November 19, 1930 ~ December 20, 2021 (age 91)


Frances Putney Hamburg, age 91 of Midland, passed away Monday, December 21, 2021 at home with her loving family by her side. The daughter of the late Ralph and Mary (Durfee) Putney was born November 19, 1930 in Monroe, Michigan. She resided in Lenox, Massachusetts from 1935 – 1950 and earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s from Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. She further studied at University of Wisconsin and University of California-Berkeley. On August 28, 1964, Fran married Roland Hamburg in Berkeley, California. They shared 54 years together before his death in 2018.


Fran was employed in Chemical Research, first with the National Institutes of Health from 1952 – 1961, and then with Down Chemical Co. from 1975 – 1995. Fran was a founding member of the Midland League of Woman Voters in 1967 and has been on the local board since its establishment. With the Midland League, she served in many capacities including three terms as president or co-president. Fran also served several terms on the League of Women’s Voters - Michigan.  


Fran was very active with her church, United Church of Christ and held a number of offices including two terms as moderator. She also served on the Midland City Housing Commission and Midland Coalition for Choice. Fran’s activism for children with disabilities led her to serve as the first president for Center for Independent Living (now the Disability 5Network). She also served with other agencies such as United Cerebral Palsy, Arnold Center, Reece Endeavor, and the Midland County ESA.


Together she and Roland had two children, Mark (Michelle) Hamburg and Jennifer (David) Kirby. Also surviving are her grandsons, Max and Gavin Hamburg; and sisters, Margaret McCall and Polly Coote.


Services to celebrate Fran’s life will be held in spring of 2022. Memorial contributions are suggested to either the United Church of Christ – Midland, League of Women’s Voters – Michigan, or Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania. Cremation arrangements are under the care of Wilson MILLER Funeral Home. Personal messages of condolence may be offered to the family at
