Ethel M. Mortenson

February 28, 1922 ~ January 8, 2021 (age 98)


Ethel B. Mortenson, our loving mother, and grandmother, passed away Friday, January 8, 2021, at the age of 98. The daughter of the late James F. and Rosa A. (Meyers) Beougher was born February 28, 1922, in Midland. On February 24, 1945, she married the love of her life, Carl N. Mortenson in Midland. They shared 73 years together before his passing in 2018.


Family was very important to Ethel. She was a loving mother and nurturing grandmother. The family enjoyed many trips throughout the country. Together, she and Carl enjoyed playing bridge, ballroom dancing, and golfing.


Ethel was a 1938 graduate of Midland High School, after which she attended the Bay City Business College for two years. She then went on to work as an Executive Secretary with the Dow Chemical Company for 10 years. Ethel was a Sunday school teacher for her church, taught drama at Seibert Elementary and was Secretary for the Plymouth Elementary PTA.


Ethel was the Midland County Republican Chair during the 1980 presidential election. Upon President Reagan’s election, she and her family attended his inaugural ball. She also served as secretary for the Midland County Republican Party and helped organize many fundraising activities for Dave Camp and Bill Schuette.


Ethel was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church, the Midland Country Club and a supporter of the Midland Symphony Orchestra. She was also the president, treasurer and longtime member of the Midland Woman’s Study Club.


Ethel is survived by her children, Carole L. Crary of Midland, and Cathryn L. White (Dr. Daniel) of Midland; grandchildren, Catherine Crary, Dr. David White (Dr. Jennifer Smith), Carolyn Crary, Dr. Jeffrey White (Samantha).


Private funeral services for Mrs. Mortenson will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Midland City Cemetery.
