Wanda Jean Bird

Wanda Jean Bird, age 79 of Midland, passed away on Monday October 5, 2026, at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor. The daughter of the late Alfred and Eva (Hoon) Schaefer was born in Midland on August 10, 1947. Wanda was a woman who found joy in the simple things in life and never hesitated to share her personality, her humor, or opinion with those around her.

She loved to fish, watch deer, and spend time outdoors. Wanda was an avid baseball fan and was never afraid to offer her opinion as the family’s unofficial hitting coach. She also never misses an opportunity to sit down for a game of cards, where her great sense of humor and competitive spirt could shine. Wanda was also an accomplished archer. During the 1970’s, she competed throughout Michigan and won numerous events. She would proudly remind her family that she was the “best women archer in five states.” Her accomplishments eventually led to the opportunity to meet legendary bowhunter and archery pioneer Fred Bear, a memory she was always proud to share.

Above all, she treasured her family. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren, and she loved watching them grow and being part of their lives. She leaves behind her two boys and a family who will forever remember her love of the outdoors, her competitive spirit, her quick wit and her willingness to always give her opinion whether anyone asked for it or not.

Surviving Wanda are her sons, Al (Bobbi) Bird of Sanford, Kent (Tara) Bird of Freeland; grandchildren, Ryan Bird, Nathan Bird and Tayler Brandt. In addition to her parents, Wanda was preceded in death by her sisters, Yvonne Schaefer, Luanne LaBerge; her buddy Steven Waite.

Funeral and committal services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday October 9, 2026, at Wilson MILLER Funeral Home with Pastor David Kissinger of Midland Missionary Church officiating. A private burial will be held at Lee Township Cemetery. Family will receive guests at the funeral home on Thurs from 4 until 7:00 p.m. and on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be directed to the wishes of the family.
