Walter C. Lewis

Walter Charles Lewis, 76, of Midland, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, June 22, 2019, at Nottingham Place.


Walter was born December 30, 1942 in Sanford, Michigan to the late James Abraham and Mary Ann (Foster) Lewis. He graduated from Midland High School. Walter served in the U.S. Army from 1960 - 1963, and was stationed in Germany and honorably discharged. He was employed at Dow Chemical for 33 years. Walter began his career as a Journeyman Pipefitter and advanced to a Construction Manager. Walter retired in 1997 from Dow Chemical, but continued to work as a sub-contractor through Kelly Services on special projects for Dow.


Walter enjoyed riding motorcycles, riding horses, camping, taking care of his lawn and walking daily. Walter joined the Midland Martial Arts Academy and became a second degree black belt instructor. Walter was an expert golfer who spent many days on the golf course and traveling to different states to golf. His true passion was spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Walter was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.


Walter married Karen Jane (Richards) at St. John's Lutheran Chruch on July 18, 1964 and together they celebrated 55 wonderful years of marriage. He is survived by his wife Karen; daughter Laurie Lewis-Bauer (Troy Buzzard); two sons John (Lori) Lewis; Joel (Nancy) Lewis; six grandchildren Meghan (Robert) Martin, Sonya (D. J.) Hogan, Jessica (Will) Lewis - Howard, Jacob Lewis, Jay (Kayleigh) Lewis, and Hannah Bauer; three great-grandchildren Jaedyn, Dakota, and Penelope; brother George (Dawn) Lewis; sister Debra (David) Ullrich; sister-in-law Dorothy Lewis, and many nieces and nephews. Walter was proceeded in death by four sisters Mary, Dorothy, Loretta, and Betty Jean and by one brother James.


A celebration of Walter's life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 29, 2019, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 505 E. Carpenter Street, Midland, MI 48640 with the Rev. Josh Parsons officiating. The family will receive guests at the church on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service. The family has requested donations be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital or St. John's Lutheran Church. The family would like to thank Nottingham Place for the loving care they provided to our loved one and to Southern Care Hospice for the care and support given to our family. Arrangements are made under the care of Wilson MILLER Funeral home.
