Our beloved Mother, Ruth E. (Martin) Skutt (93) passed away peacefully, November 25, 2011 at Brittany Manor with her loving family at her side. She was born December 27, 1917 in Jasper Township, Midland County to Fern H. Martin and Ora (Bigelow) Hafelein. On April 10, 1937 she married Orin E. Skutt in Midland. After 66 years of marriage, he predeceased her in death on June 26, 2003. In addition to being a wife and Mother, she enjoyed gardening, cooking, bird watching, baking bread and playing cards. From 1973 until 2003 she bowled on a Northern Stars bowing league. Even after macular degeneration took her sight, she continued to bowl for many years with her teammates (daughter and granddaughter) guiding her where to stand at the approach, pointing out how many pins were left and where they were located. They became her eyes so that she could continue to bowl. We must not forget that one of her all-time favorite things to do was listening to The Tigers. She was a big time Tigers fan. Ruth's faith in God was so important to her. She had been a long time member of the Floyd Church of God where for many years she coordinated their funeral dinners. For many years, she and her husband enjoyed camping at Rose Lake near Cadillac.
She is survived by her daughters, Debra (Duane) Forshee of Midland and Sharon McCann of Mesa, Arizona; and one son Nelson (Joyce) Skutt of Sanford. She is survived by 11 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren with another due in March and 10 great-great grandchildren; one brother Donald (Ardith) Martin of Midland, two sisters, Margie (Dick) Benner of Midland and Verna Schloneger of Breckenridge; sister-in-law Eleanor Hafelein and her two furry friends, Lexie and Gabi. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by a son, Dennis D. Skutt, killed in Vietnam on July 11, 1967; sisters Beatrice Martin and Alice Kirby; brothers Clifford Martin, Robert Martin and William Hafelein.
Funeral service for Mrs. Skutt will be conducted at 11:00 am Tuesday, November 29, 2011 from the Wilson MILLER Funeral Home with Pastor William Caroffino, of the Floyd Church of God officiating. Ruth will be interred next to her husband and son in Lee Twp. Cemetery. Family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Monday November 28, 2011 from 2-4 and 6-8 and at the funeral home on Tuesday from 10:00 am until time of service. The family would like to send a special thank you to Wilma Skutt for her dedication and love for the previous five years and also to Brittany Manor and Heartland Hospice of Bay City for their compassionate care during the past five months. Memorials may be offered to the Floyd Church of God or to the Macular Degeneration Foundation at P.O.B. 531313, Henderson, NV 89053.
