Robert Lindsay Everett, a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, passed away peacefully on July 7, 2026, his 86th birthday. He was born on July 7, 1940 in Flint, Michigan, to the late Robert B. and Shirley E. (Lindsay) Everett. His family moved to Midland when Bob was ten and he graduated from Midland High School in 1958. He then attended the University of Michigan where he earned a degree in business. As part of a three-generation family tradition, he loved all things maize and blue. Bob returned to Midland to work full-time at Everett Carpet Company, a business his father started in 1950.
Shortly afterwards, Bob met Dorothy May Pattin and the couple married on February 18, 1967 in Lakewood, Ohio. They celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary just prior to her passing, a testament to their enduring love and partnership. Together, they built a life filled with family and shared adventures while he balanced managing a family business. Bob was a dedicated father to their daughters, Susan (Paul) Kramer, Jill (Jonathan) Fine and grandchildren, Timothy Kramer, Jason & Julia Fine. Also, to his daughter Katherine Elliott, grandsons Robert (Carrie) Elliott, their children Taya & Olivia and Brandon (Loren) Elliott. Bob was the oldest of five children and is survived by Tom (Joan S) Everett, Nancy (Patrick) Bollman, Phillip (Joan B) Everett and David (Candace) Everett, nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
Bob treasured spending time with family, friends, colleagues and customers he met at the store. He could recall not only their faces and names but also the carpet installed in their homes, a testament to his extraordinary mind. His commitment to the family business for nearly five decades was evident in his work ethic, inspiring others to carry that same dedication into their own endeavors including those contributing to the continued success of Everett Carpet. Bob was pleased that the store remains family-owned and operated for 76 years (and counting) in the city he held dear. He was grateful for the opportunity to provide floor covering for local businesses, churches, schools, offices, Dow Corning, Dow Chemical and finally the Dow Diamond, his last significant project before retirement.
A man of faith and service, Bob was a longtime member of Memorial Presbyterian Church and donated numerous hours to church functions although he may have spent more time talking than working. He lit up any room with his friendly demeanor, enjoyed interacting with people and supporting others through organizations such as Easter Seals, Men of Music and Kiwanis. As a music enthusiast, Bob played the trumpet, sang in the church choir, listened to M Glee Club, Men of Music, and Midland Concert Band, and was a patron of the Center for the Arts.
Bob was active in several clubs as a student such as band, golf, Latin Guild, Hi-Y and stocks & bonds. At a young age, he was already developing leadership skills, business knowledge and sense of community service; characteristics that would later serve him well as a reputable local retailer. Although retail hours consumed most of his time, he found joy in cross-country skiing, golfing, curling and taking Sunday drives. Travel for Bob was simply relaxing “up north” with Dotty, playing Rummikub, grilling steaks and basking in the sun along the shores of Lake Huron while analyzing the stock pages. His ability to retain ever-changing numbers and perform thorough calculations was impressive. Though dementia stole much from Bob’s once detailed mind, his sense of humor and the joy he felt when others visited never faded.
Bob’s memorial service and luncheon will begin at 11:00 am on Friday, July 31, 2026 at Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1310 Ashman St. Midland, MI 48640. Rev. Dr. Wallace H. Mayton III will officiate with burial at Midland City Cemetery after lunch. Visitation will be at the Wilson Miller Funeral Home, 4210 N. Saginaw Rd. Midland, MI 48640 on Thursday, July 30 from 4:00 – 6:00 pm and at the church from 10:00 am until the time of service. Those wishing to donate in Bob’s name may consider Men of Music, other local nonprofits or Memorial Presbyterian Church and toast his life by raising a cone of butter pecan ice cream.
