Myrtle Salisbury

August 10, 1921 — December 14, 2008

Myrtle (Bonner) Salisbury age 87 of Midland, died on Sunday, December 14, 2008. The daughter of the late Henry and Gladys (Alexander) Bonner was born on Aug. 10, 1921 in Hillman, MI. She graduated high school at the age of 17 and attended County Normal earning her teaching certificate at a young age. She started her teaching career in a one room school house where some of her students where older than her. On June 21, 1947 she married Mr. Ralph W. Salisbury in Hillman. He predeceased her on March 21, 1989. Myrtle graduated from CMU with her BS degree and then from U. of M. with her Masters Degree and was close to completing her PhD. Myrtle had taught at McGill, Longview and Parkdale schools, retiring from Jefferson in 1985. She was an avid archeologist and enjoyed teaching her students the art of "The Dig" at the Nature Center and annually at Jefferson. She enjoyed traveling and had been around the world at least two times. She wanted to visit everyplace that she had taught about and experience that culture. Myrtle also enjoyed wood working, wood carving and oil painting and excelled at her projects. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the A.A.U.W., M.E.A., the Midland Area Retired School Personal, the Delta Kappa Gama, Midland Nature Club, Midland Historical Society and the Oxbow Archaeological Society.

Myrtle is survived by her daughter, Vicki (Gary) Decker of Midland and her son, William H. (Deb) Salisbury of Auburn; two grandchildren, Christine (Douglas) Teugh of Portage and Brett Wilcox of Honor; two grandchildren by marriage, Jason Decker and Jennifer Decker; and great grandchildren, David Alexander & Catherine Alyssa Teugh of Portage.

Funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Wednesday, December 17, 2008 from the Wilson MILLER Funeral Home. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 and at the funeral home on Wednesday from 10:00 AM until time of service. Memorials may be offered to the Arthritis Foundation or to the American Diabetes Association. Personal messages of support for the family may be offered at www.wilson-miller.com
