Merlin "Red" Helmer

Merlin J. "Red" Helmer, age 76 of Sanford, died Saturday, June 26, 2010 at the Toni and Trish House.
The son of the late Harold and Virginia (Miller) Helmer was born December 6, 1933 in Cheboygan. He was raised in Afton, Michigan and graduated from Onaway High School. Red had owned and operated a service station in Cheboygan until moving to Midland in his early 20's. He worked as an electrician for the Dow Chemical Co., retiring in 1995 after 30 years of service.
Red did volunteer work for senior citizens in the area and enjoyed helping others. He was a past Exalted Ruler of the Midland B.P.O. Elks #1610 and had been active with their youth groups.

Mr. Helmer is survived by his loving companion, Loretta Brown of Sanford; daughters, Charlene Dryer of Arizona, Barbara Goodman of Arizona; grandchildren, Joshua DuFresene, Dawn Allen, Brandy Hull, Jacob Goodman; several great grandchildren; half brother, Elton Crawford of Grayling; and niece, Ann Marie Mitchell of Sanford.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter, Colleen Hull and seven siblings.

In keeping with his wishes, cremation has been arranged through the Wilson MILLER Funeral Home where there will be no services.
