Mary Lou Carey

Mary Lou Carey passed away on Monday, April 8, 2019, at her residence in Sanford with her children at her side.


The daughter of the late Peter and Anna (Kruezer) Palmer, Mary Lou was born on September 25, 1935. She attended Mio Public Schools and later earned her high school diploma from Midland High School. Mary Lou married Mark Carey in her home town of Luzerne, Michigan on September 15, 1951. He passed away in September, 1998. The couple lived in Beaverton MI before moving to their residence in Hope MI where they lived for over thirty years and eventually moved to Sanford.


Mary Lou was a dedicated wife, mother, and homemaker. She loved attending her children's and grandchildren's sporting events, dance recitals, and school activities. She enjoyed cooking and baking for her family, flower gardening, and attending as many Loons baseball games as possible. She and Mark also enjoyed their summers camping at Houghton Lake and spending their winter months in Sun City AZ. She was a member of the Ruby Chicks Red Hat Club and volunteered many hours at MidMichigan Medical Center.


Mary Lou is survived by her children, Kathie (Michael) Pontious of Sanford and Patrick (Julie) Carey of Midland; grandchildren Nicole (Carlos) Rico, Renee (Shaun) Howard, Scott Pontious, and Michael Carey; great-grandchildren Emma, Mark, Matthew, Elie, and Evan Rico; brother William (Gail) Palmer; special friend and companion Harvey (Vern) Thurlow; and many nieces and nephews.


In addition to her parents and husband, Mark, Mary Lou was preceded in death by her son, Michael W. Carey and her sister, Bernice Morse.


The family would like to give special thanks to the management and staff of Meridian Acres Assisted Living Facility for their wonderful care, kindness, and thoughtfulness during Mary Lou's stay with them.


Funeral Services will be held on Monday, April 15,, 2019, at First United Methodist Church in Midland at 11:00 am. The family will receive visitors at Wilson MILLER Funeral Home on Sunday from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m., and at the church on MOnday from 10:00 a.m. to time of service. A private internment will take place at Midland City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to the Carey Family Scholarship Fund, c/o The Midland Area Community Foundation; The Care Team Hospice Services; or charity of the donor's choice.
