Martha M. Carl

January 26, 1919 — March 7, 2017

Martha (Moorehead) Carl, age 98 of Midland died Tuesday, March 7, 2017 at Stratford Pines. She was born January 26, 1919 in Gaylord Michigan to the late Raymond and Ellen (Olund) Moorehead on their family farm; second oldest of eight children. At the age of 13 she moved into town in order to attend high school. Martha worked as a clerk in a dry goods store to pay for her room and board while going to school. She was the first Snow Queen of Otsego County at the age of 17 and was involved in the Grange Ladies Degree Team along with her mother and sister, Lillie Bell Simpson. She married Wilbur A. Carl on June 20, 1938. He passed away on May 29, 2001. In 1950 they, along with their four children, moved to Midland.

Martha was proud to be a member of the Homer United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women's Group. Along with raising a large family, she was busy tending to her beautiful flower gardens and canning produce from her large garden to share with not only her family but other families as well. She was known for her wonderful baking, especially her pies. Her family has fond memories of being around their dining room table enjoying birthday and holiday dinners; many times with other families and friends. Family is and always will be enjoying Martha's many wonderful recipes in the years to come. She was involved in Girl Scouting for many years and was an excellent seamstress. She and Wilbur will always be remembered as the graceful couple out on the dance floor whom everyone enjoyed watching.

She was a talented artist and displayed many of her paintings in her home. She worked outside of the home in jobs ranging from census taker to in-home care provider and housekeeper. She along with her friends from church volunteered many hours to brighten the lives of those less fortunate. She and her husband, Wilbur, had an open-door policy over the years for anyone from family members to friends who may have needed a place to stay or a shoulder to cry on.

Martha is survived by her children, Wilbur LeVerne (Ann) Carl, Dianne (Dale) Moening, Linda Town (Lanny), Forrestene (John) Keenon; 7 grandchildren, Lorie Keller (Ken), Taggart (Lisa) Town, Kimberly (Kyle) Riddle, Michelle Moening (Evan), Kevin (Stephanie) Moening, Justin (Michelle) Town and Brittny (Tom) Williams; 12 great-grandchildren, Zane Keller, Oliver and Henry Town, Tyler Wyman and Kolton Riddle, Kyle and Connor Moening, Kendalyn, Bryce and Makenna Town, Noah and Gram Williams.
