Joseph V. Malan

April 5, 1934 — January 16, 2022

Joseph (Vernon) Malan, age 87 of Midland, Michigan, passed away surrounded by his family on January 16, 2022. The son of the late Vernon and Beulah (Mantle) Malan was born in Linn, Missouri on April 5, 1934.


Joe is survived his son Larry Malan, daughter Lori (Jim) Michewicz, sister Velda Mae (David) Tremaine, grandchildren; Nick, Olivia & Leo Malan, Allie Michewicz, nieces, nephews and extended family. He is predeceased by his loving wife of 40 years Barbara (Medley); friend and companion Sharon Maxwell. Joe was a loving father, husband, grandfather and friend to everyone.


Joe graduated from the University of Missouri Joe graduated valedictorian of Chamois High School and organized reunions for 40 years. He worked as a CPA for over 50 years in executive or managerial capacities in the Detroit metropolitan area at City National Bank in Detroit, Michigan Services Credit Union in Southfield, Community National Bank in Pontiac and in Midland at Wolverine Bank retiring in 1993. Following "retirement" he served as business manager for 12 years at the Salvation Army office in Midland.


Joe spent his free time traveling both domestic and internationally living new adventures; always making friends everywhere he went and enjoying his family and "Lake life" in Sanford MI. Joe also enjoyed movies, live music, storytellers and reading. Joe was always there to listen, pitch in with a servant's heart or to go out to eat with his numerous networks of friends.


Among Joe's many loves were travel, music, fine arts, photography, Michigan State football and civic service. Though a country boy at heart from Linn Missouri, Joe fit right in with any crowd and adopted the Midland community. In addition to being a member of the Kiwassee Kiwanis, Joe served as treasurer(s) and on multiple community boards such as: Friends of the Pere Marquette Rail Trail, The Rock youth center, Shelter House and the Affordable housing Association.


A special thank you to Jenny Wale, Joe's friends at Riverside Place and his dear friends "Kelly" and Kerry Buell, Dawn and Nathan Heydens. Also, the family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude towards Heart To Heart Hospice in Fenton for their loving care and support, the Karmanos Cancer Institute and the Wilson MILLER Funeral Home.


A celebration of Joe's life will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 5, 2022 at the Wilson MILLER Funeral Home. Family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:00 noon until the time of service. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to: "Friends of the Pere Marquette Rail Trail" (FPMRT), P.O. Box 505, Midland, MI 48641 and "The Rock Center for Youth Development", 2205 Jefferson Ave. Midland 48640 (via USPS or Facebook).
