John Risk Frost

April 30, 1925 — January 31, 2011

John Risk Frost, 85 formerly of Midland, MI passed away at his home in Sun City West, AZ on January 31, 2011, after a courageous struggle with Parkinson's disease. He was born April 30th, 1925 to Charles and Grace (Risk) Frost in Lisbon, ND. John studied Chemistry at NDSU where he met the love of his life Esther Fugl. He joined the US Navy in 1944 as an Apprentice Seaman in the V-12 unit and studied Medicine at the University of Washington in Seattle. After WWII ended, John married Esther, August 15th, 1948. He studied Medicine at U of ND, Grand Forks before returning for his post graduate in Chemistry at NDSU. In 1953 they moved to Midland, when John was hired by Dow Chemical to work in the Saran Polymers lab. John retired from Dow in 1982 as a Senior Research Engineer, with ten patents to his credit, including; Rovana fabric, processes for making plastic films less clingy, and a method for adhering closure strips to plastic bags.
John earned his amateur radio license at the age of 14 and was a life member of the Midland Amateur Radio Club, call letters, W8PHG. He sang in the choir of Memorial Presbyterian Church where he was a member for more than 50 years. John studied sailing at the Delta Sailing School and was a lieutenant in the Saginaw Bay Power Squadron. He loved sailing with his family and friends, and exploring Lake Huron on his sloop, Black Knight. In his seventies, John was an active member of the Big Wheelers Bicycling Club of Midland. John was a Stephen Minister at the Shepherds of the Hills United Methodist Church in Sun City West, AZ.
John was preceded in death by his son Stefan (d. 1965) and daughter Karen (d. 2009), also his parents and sisters, Ruth Hoyt, Rosemary Simanton and Jean Miller. He is survived and will be dearly missed by his wife Esther (Fugl) Frost of Sun City West, AZ, daughters, Jennifer Frost (Bob Gilson) of Phoenix, AZ, Lisa Frost (Mike Kusiak) of LaSelva Beach, CA, and son Charles Frost (Katherine Russell) of Midland, MI. Granddaughter, Caitlin Gilson, and grandsons Mason Frost, Carsten Kusiak and Kaden Kusiak, sister-in-law Sharon Fugl, and many loving relatives and friends.

Funeral Service will be conducted at 11:00 am, Saturday, February 12, 2011 from Memorial Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Wallace H. Mayton, III officiating.
Interment will be in Homer Township Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the Wilson MILLER Funeral Home on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm and at the church on Saturday from 10:00 am until time of service.
Memorials may be offered to Memorial Presbyterian Church.
