Joan Walsh

Joan C. Walsh, 88, former long-time resident of Midland, died on Friday December 4, 2020.& She was born on May 3, 1932, in Detroit, Michigan to the late Neil and Cecilia Lynch. She attended St. Brigid's school, graduated from Midland High School (class of 1950), and earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Marygrove College. Joan was a member of St. Brigid of Kildare Catholic Church for most of her life.

Joan married Edward Walsh on August 25, 1956 in Midland. They were married for 50 years, until Ed's death in 2007. Joan was the best, most amazing mother to her five children. She was very active, and taught her children to ski, ice skate, swim, ride bicycles, canoe, golf, and play tennis. She loved cross-country skiing and snowshoeing after a fresh snowfall, ice skating outside on a clear cold day, playing tennis long into a summer evening chasing down every single ball, and whizzing around the neighborhood on her bicycle. She rarely missed a putt and could swim without making a splash. She was an expert seamstress and she enjoyed playing bridge with her bridge club. She was happiest when her whole family was together. She is remembered for her kindness, her intelligence and wit, her seemingly endless amounts of energy, her independence, and her sheer courage and toughness in the face of setbacks. She will be dearly missed by everyone who had the good fortune to know her.

Joan is survived by four of her children, Joe (Orrie), Peggy (Philip), Catherine (John), and John (Stephanie), her beloved grandchildren, Rosie, Sheila, Joseph, Conner, Grace, and Colin, her sisters Margaretanne and Molly, and her step-grandchildren Lenny and Corey. She was preceded in death by her daughter Anne Marie, her husband Ed, and her sister Maureen.

A private Catholic Burial will be conducted at Midland Cemetery. A Catholic Funeral Liturgy will be scheduled at a later date. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Anne Walsh Memorial Nursing Scholarship Fund at the University of Michigan School of Nursing, or another charity of their choice.
