Jean M. (Whiting) Hook, age 93 of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, formerly of Midland, died Thursday evening March 5, 2015 at Conway Medical Center in Conway, South Carolina. The daughter of the late Asa E. and Opal (Morris) Whiting was born in Standish, Michigan on July 13, 1921. She was a graduate of Standish High School and then went on to graduate from Michigan State University in 1943 with the Bachelors of Science Degree in Nutrition. Jean was appointed by the former Governor William Milliken for the State Commission on Physical Fitness. She also volunteered at the Midland Community Center. Jean served on the State Board of the Michigan Dietary Association, Michigan Heart Association, School Services Association, a charter member of the Tri City Dietetic Association, a member of the American Dietetic Association and a former member of First United Methodist Church. On June 4, 1944 in Midland Jean married Donald Hook and after 66 years of marriage he died on October 24, 2010.
Surviving are her daughters, Barbara (John) Buege of Maryland, Deborah (Stephen) Kurucz of Myrtle Beach, SC; grandchildren, Andrea, Christa, Tyler Buege, Kelly & Casey Kurucz; great grandchildren, Rylan, Hailey, Connor, Kellyn, Gavin, Jaren & Aman; sisters, Joan Miller of Ann Arbor and Elizabeth Manis of Westbrook, IL.
Funeral and committal services for Mrs. Hook will take place 1:00 p.m. Wednesday March 11, 2015 from the Wilson MILLER Funeral Home 4210 N. Saginaw Rd Midland. Interment will be in Midland City Cemetery. Memorials may be offered to First United Methodist Church of the Dietetic Internship Program at MidMichigan Medical Center.
