Gary D. Kilmer, age 82, of Sanford, Michigan, passed away on March 7, 2026. He was born in Britton, South Dakota on September 19, 1943, to the late Clyde and Geraldine (Smith) Kilmer.
Gary honorably served his country with the United States Army during the Vietnam War. On July 12, 1969, he married Ruth Kilmer in Bay City, Michigan, and they shared 56 wonderful years together. A talented photographer, Gary specialized in weddings and portraits, capturing countless cherished memories for others throughout his career.
In addition to his wife, Gary is survived by his children, Dr. John Kilmer (Naiyun Fan) and Mary Kilmer; grandchildren, Andrew and Benjamin Kilmer; brother-in-law, Larry Poole; his pet, Jackson; and many extended family members. Gary was predeceased by his parents; and sisters, Karen Lambert and Carol Ann Poole.
He was a member of the American Legion Sanford Post #443 and a proud citizen of the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians. Known for his great sense of humor and quick wit, Gary brought joy to those around him. He loved spending time with family and found happiness in fishing and camping, where he also enjoyed cooking.
A funeral service to honor Gary’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at Wilson MILLER Funeral Home. Pastor Don Duford will officiate with military honors to be presented by the United States Army and Midland Honor Guard. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
