Francis Bliss Hedelund

Frances Bliss Hedelund, age 92 of Midland, died Friday February 19, 2010 at Bay Bluffs in Harbor Springs, MI where she lived for the past two years to be near her daughter Judy and husband Jerry. It was at Bay Bluffs where she was the Queen of the Sweetheart Ball in 2009. The daughter of the late Aaron T. and Frances (Church) Bliss was born in Midland on April 22, 1917 where she was raised and educated. Frances was the Class President of all her high school years back in the 1930's !!! Imagine, a woman as a president of the class then. She organized reunions until three years ago. On November 14, 1942 she married J. William Hedelund in Midland and he predeceased her on August 28, 2008. After graduation Frances was a secretary to a department head at the Dow Chemical Co. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, choir member, and alter guild member along with her mother and six other brothers and sisters of the Bliss family. The family was a pillar of the Midland Community for the last century. Her father was the originator of Bliss Abstract on Main St. where she also worked and her mother was very involved in the community. Frances served as a volunteer and secretary of the Red Cross, involved in many Theatre Guild productions and acting. She was a Midland Hospital Volunteer and was a distinguished member of the "GOLDEN GIRLS" club which is an elite club in Midland meeting weekly at the Midland Country Club for many years. Frances was involved in bridge clubs in Midland and Scottsdale, AZ, where she and her husband wintered for many years and she enjoyed crewel needlework and rug hooking. Her mission late in life, she decided, was to have fun...and she did. All who met her loved her sense of humor and fun. She will be sadly missed.

Frances was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and is survived by, son, James (Louise) Hedelund of Freeland and their children Emily, Eric and Abbie; son, Jack (Leslie) Hedelund of Fair Haven, MI and their children Amanda, Ronnie and Courtney; daughter, Judy (Jerry) Adams of Harbor Springs and their children Lauren, Chris and Nicole. She is also survived by seven great grandchildren and her sister Marjorie Schewe.
Frances was predeceased by her husband of nearly 66 years, J. William Hedelund; brothers, Roy, Lumen and A.T. Bliss; and sisters, Kathleen Sherman and Janice.

Funeral service for Mrs. Hedelund will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Monday, February 22, 2010 from St. John's Episcopal Church with the Reverend Michael H. Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in Midland City Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church on Monday from noon until time of service. Memorials may be offered to the St. John's Episcopal Church Food Pantry.
