Estol LaVerne Swem, age 97 of Sanford, died Friday morning December 9, 2022 at his home surrounded by his family. The son of the late Blucher and Ruby Belle (Eggleston) Swem was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan on April 20, 1925. Estol served in the United States Air Force during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was employed with the City of Madison Heights from 1960 till his retirement in 1975, where he also served as the City Manager from 1966 till 1975. Estol was a member of Sanford United Methodist Church, enjoyed camping, fishing, playing guitar and clogging with his wife. On April 22, 1948 he married the former Betty Snyder and after 69 years of marriage she died on January 23, 2018.
Surviving are his children, Gary (Joanne) Swem, Janet (Leonard) Fox, Judy Ciesielski; grandchildren, Trevor (Darcy), Tracy (Peter), Ryan (Erin), Troy (Annah), Taylor, Kevin, Kelly; great grandchildren, Henry, Holden, Cora, Eva, Leo, Louisa, August, Kason; sister, Celestine (William) Olson; many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife and parents, Estol was preceded in death by siblings, Alice Swem, Mildred Swem, Royal Swem, and Bernard Swem.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday December 15, 2022 at Sanford United Methodist Church with Rev. Lisa Kelley officiating. Interment will be at 3:00 p.m. in Mount Rest Cemetery, St. John's, Michigan. Family will receive guests at the Wilson MILLER Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4 until 7:00 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Memorial contributions may be directed to Sanford United Methodist Church or Valley Hospice.
