Edward Maticka

Edward Maticka, age 93 of Midland, died Monday December 28, 2009 at his residence. The son of the late Thomas and Mary (Savo) Maticka was born in Sanford on March 13, 1916 where he was raised and educated. Ed served in the United States Army during World War II. Ed owned & operated Sanford Lumber after the war and then started Edward Maticka Home Builders. He then owned Sanford Hardware Store and then went to work as a contractor for Bennett Builders in 1970 and worked until retiring in 1982. Ed was a well respected home builder and finish carpenter. Over the years Ed developed many properties along Sanford Lake. He was a member of Sanford United Methodist Church, Sanford American Legion Post #443. Ed was an avid baseball fan. While in the Army he played on the baseball team that played against the Detroit Tigers in 1943. On August 24, 1946 in Bay City Ed married the former Aletha Sommer.

Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Aletha Maticka; sons, Michael E. (Debbie) Maticka, Edward H. (Tammy) Maticka all of Midland; 5 grandchildren 2 great grandchildren. Ed was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Maticka; sisters, Anna Gay and Alvina Brown.

Funeral and committal services will take place 2:00 p.m. Wednesday December 30, 2009 from Wilson MILLER Funeral Home. Rev. Dr. Janet Larner will officiate. Military Funeral Honors will be provided by the U.S. Army Funeral Honors and Midland Area Veterans. Interment will be in Jerome Township Cemetery. Family and friends may visit at the funeral home on Wednesday from 12 noon until the time of service. Memorials may be offered to Meridian Public School Scholarship Fund or Sports Booster Club and Sanford United Methodist Church.
