Doris Jacobs was born June 1, 1922 to George and Kathryn English. She was the middle child with an older sister, Maxine and a younger brother Lynn. As a young girl she spent part of her summers in Detroit helping her Uncle Ed care for her Aunt Lily. As appreciation for her help, her uncle paid for her to attend Detroit Tiger baseball games with one of her neighborhood girlfriends. The two girls would sit along the first base line watching Hank Greenberg, Charlie Gehringer and other Tiger players of the day. This began her lifelong love of Major League Baseball and in particular Tiger baseball.
She joined the Poseyville United Methodist Church as a teenager and was one of the longest tenured members of the church. Through the years she was an active member serving on committees and contributing to the church outreach programs.
In 1949 Doris met and married Roland Jacobs, also of Midland, Michigan. Roland and Doris had four children: Tim (1954), Garry (1956), Linda (1958) and Kathleen (1960). Garry passed away as an infant. She was a dedicated wife and mother. Doris was a leader of a Cub Scout pack for her son, Tim, and her nephew, Perry English, as well as other boys in the neighborhood. She also took her daughters, Linda and Kathy, and her niece, Julie (English) Ringley, to dance lessons as well and took her children along with her niece and nephew to swim lessons. Doris continued to be active in her children's lives throughout their adolescence.
In 1936 her parents, George and Kathryn bought a lot on Lake George in Clare County. As a teenager she would camp with her family on the lot until they built a cottage there in 1950. This became her lifelong haven and site of many family gatherings over the years. One of her great joys in life was opening up the cottage in the spring for the coming summer.
In addition to family, church, and baseball, one of her lifelong passions was cooking. This was especially true as Christmas approached. A plethora of cookies and candies would be created in her kitchen; always eagerly anticipated treats that all of her family and friends would look forward to each year.
Doris passed away on July 29, 2017 at the age of 95. In addition to her six great-grandchildren, Doris is survived by her son, Tim (Susan) Jacobs, Linda (Guy) Thorell and Kathleen (Dave) Cole, as well as her grandchildren Robert (Lauren) Cole, Jessica (Matthew) Price, Nathan Thorell, Alyssa Jacobs and Kelsey Jacobs; many nieces and nephews.
