Donna B. McKinnon, age 99, of Midland, passed away on July 25th, 2024, after a short illness. She was born in the family farmhouse in Greenwood Township, near Yale, Michigan on August 31st, 1924 to Zetta Badley Collins and William H. Collins.
The family moved to Port Huron when she was five years old and then moved to Marysville where she graduated in 1942 from Marysville High School. She played the saxophone in the marching band. While roller skating in Lakeport, she met the love of her life, Harold Hugh McKinnon. They were married on December 26, 1942.
Donna worked at the Fanny Farmer candy store in Port Huron and then as a floral designer at Ruff Floral for over 20 years. She and Harold spent many hours "chugging" (fishing for pickerel), water skiing, and fishing for perch in Lake Huron. They lived in Lakeport until 1956 when they moved to Port Huron, and then to Marysville. Together, they built two houses with lumber they salvaged themselves from old houses, working in the evenings and on weekends.
In 1985 they moved to Midland to be near daughter Peggy, son-in-law Tim, and granddaughter Lori. In retirement, Harold and Donna spent time camping and enjoying their home in Myrtle Beach, SC. She was very talented with crafts and enjoyed baking, traveling, and playing cards. She was an active member of Midland Cribbage Club, which she considered her family. She was affectionately called "Nana" by many people, and delighted them with plates of her homemade sugar cookies and crocheted towels. She will be remembered by all for her loving and generous good nature.
She is survived by her daughter Peggy J. McMann, son-in-law Timothy J. McMann, granddaughter Lori L. McMann, (Dr. James M. Blum), and great-grandson Martin Hugh Blum. Donna was preceded in death by here parents, husband Harold; sister, Lucille Wheelihan; brother, Wayne Collins
A visitation will be held Sunday, July 28th, from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. at the Wilson MILLER Funeral Home, 4210 N. Saginaw Rd, Midland MI and funeral services will be held Monday, July 29th at 11:00 a.m at Trinity Lutheran Church, 3701 Jefferson Ave., Midland MI. Burial will be at the Marysville Riverlawn Cemetery on Tuesday, July 29 at 2:00 p.m. Donations in her honor can be made to charities of the donor's choice.
