D. Eleanor Currie, 86, of Midland died Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at her home. The daughter of the late Erwin and Janet (Gill) Holser was born July 13, 1923 in Detroit and moved to Midland as an infant where she was raised and educated. Eleanor married Gilbert A. Currie on November 26, 1942. After 55 years of marriage Gil died February 13, 1998. Eleanor enjoyed being a Candy Striper during WWII. She was an avid golfer and shot a hole in one at both Bay Valley and the Midland Country Club. She was a life time member of Memorial Presbyterian Church and a long time member of the Midland Country Club where she was also the club champion multiple times. Eleanor was a member of Camel Back Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona where she had wintered for over 30 years. She enjoyed needlepoint and above all, treasured her family.
Mrs. Currie is survived by her children, Mary Currie of Midland, Laura Currie and friend Norm Hayes of Midland, Donald and his wife Carol Currie of Hemphill, Texas, James and his wife Kimberly of Okemos; grandchildren, Romy Rodriguez, Matthew Currie, C.J. Rodriguez; sisters, Doris Ready of Palm Springs, California, Joyce Sharpe of Passadena, California, Gerry Kaessinger of LaCanada, California; and dearest friend, Shirley Herron.
Funeral and committal services for Mrs. Currie will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, December 12, 2009 from Memorial Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Wallace H. Mayton, III officiating. Interment will be in Midland City Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Wilson MILLER Funeral Home on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 pm and at the church on Saturday from 10:00 am until the time of service. Memorials in Mrs. Currie's memory may be offered to Memorial Presbyterian Church or to the Gilbert A. and Eleanor Currie Christmas Lighting and Santa House Endowment through the Midland Area Foundation.
