It is with mixed emotions that the world has lost a faithful patriot. Claude I. Tompkins, age 98 of Sanford, Michigan, was called home to take his place in the Kingdom of Heaven, on Tuesday May 28, 2024. All who knew him are better for his touch in their lives. It is no minor achievement for him to reach the age of 98. Unfortunately, he had out lived the majority of his contemporaries.
The son of the late Coy D. and Daisy (McLean) Tompkins was born on September 8, 1925 in Peel, Carleton County, New Brunswick, Canada. He served in the Royal Canadian Army during World War II and participated in the liberation of Holland. Upon moving to Royal Oak, Michigan Claude operated his own print shop for many years. On June 11, 1947, Claude married the former Ruth M. Hallett, and after 74 years of marriage, she died on November 28, 2021.
Surviving are his children, M. Sharon (James) Carruthers, Norman A. (Susan) Tompkins; grandchildren, Scott (Lisa) Carruthers, Brent (Meg) Tompkins, Kelli (Mike) Meyer, Karri (Ben) Palmer; great grandchildren, Grace, Ryan, Dyllan, Carter, Mylah, Coy, Claire, Payton, Morgan.
A celebration of Claude's Life will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday June 5, 2024 at the Wilson MILLER Funeral Home with a reception to follow in the Wilson Reception Room at the funeral home. Family will receive guests at the funeral Home on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association.
