Beth (Engwis) Chapman 72, passed away peacefully with her husband by her side on April 5, 2026 (Easter Sunday), after a courageous three-month battle with lung cancer.
The very best wife, mom, “Grandma Bethie”, sister and friend, Beth was born in Midland on August 22, 1954 to Don and Loretta Engwis and lived in Midland her entire life. Beth married Dave Chapman on August 31, 1974 and together they had three children, Jen, Katie and Matt.
Beth loved nothing more than being a mom to her kids and Grandma to five grandkids. Beth worked for the Midland Public Schools as a classroom paraprofessional and Media Specialist for more than 25 years and she loved reading to all the children that came through the library. There is no doubt that “Mrs. Chapman” touched the lives of hundreds of kids during her time with Midland Public Schools.
Beth was the glue of her family. She would never miss an event for her kids or grandkids, would be known to cook up a storm during summer weekends in Traverse City, was always there for each of her kids and made sure every birthday and holiday was special for everyone. She loved nothing more than the times her family were all together under one roof. Beth also loved the one-on-one time she spent with the “little grandkids” in Grand Rapids and loved to make the “big grandkids” sporting events, often being the loudest Grandma in the stands.
Beth will be deeply and forever missed by her husband of 51 years Dave, children Jen (Ryan Wall), Katie Chapman, Matt (Erika) Chapman, and her Grandchildren Jaden, Noah, Austin, Brighton and Emmett. Sheldon, Beth’s fur baby, is also lost without her. She will also be missed by an amazing group of friends and her siblings Kurt (Lynn) Engwis, Lee (Lori) Engwis, and Jill Hoover, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Beth was preceded in death by her parents Don and Loretta, in-laws Alvin and Ruth Chapman, her brother Lon Engiws, and son-in-law Shawn Coin.
Beth always put her love and care for others before anything else. Even during her final days, Beth wanted to make sure her friends, family and grandchildren were fed, rested, and cared for. In keeping with her desire to help others she has requested, If possible, her remains be donated to a medical teaching facility such as University of Michigan to help train young doctors and nurses. If Beth taught us anything, it was how to be kind, how to encourage and how to love deeply. As you go through life, her family encourages you to do just that. Stop and love deeply, be kind, and take care of those around you.
Beth’s family would like to invite you to a gathering time at Wilson Miller Funeral home on Saturday, April 11, 2026 from 2:00pm-5:00pm. Memorial contributions in Beth’s name can be made to the Pardee Cancer Treatment Fund of Midland/Gladwin Counties and Williams Township.
