Barbara L. Shakes (Beals), age 66 of Midland died Saturday, August 6, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer.
The daughter of the late Napoleon and Leigh (Cardinal) Fish was born January 4, 1945 in Detroit where she was raised and educated; graduating from St. Gregory High School in 1963.
Barbara had owned and operated B & G Lakeside Market in Harrison then moved to Sanford and managed Lakeside Market. She retired from Lowe's in 2008 after 10 years of service.
Barbara was an extremely compassionate/non judgmental person who spent her entire life loving, caring, listening and putting others needs above all else.
She is survived by her son, Donald (Janet) Shakes of Harrison; daughter, Kimberly (Darryl) Potter of Midland; grandson, Donald (Nichole Dale); step grandson, Matthew Harmon-Potter; sister, Irene (Tony) Banules; sisters in law, Marilyn Fish, Janie (Leonard) Lovins; brother in law, Kevin (Kathi) Shakes; companion, Leo Cronenwett; and many nieces and nephews.
Barbara was predeceased by an infant daughter, Mary; brother, Art; sisters, Berniece Glenn, Loretta Cox, Phyllis Chandler, Ruth Anne Wertman and infant sister, Shirley Ann.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Tendercare of Midland for their many kindnesses.
The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at 11:00 am, Wednesday, August 10, 2011 from St. Agnes Catholic Church in Sanford with the Reverend Father Dan Fox, OFM-Cap. as celebrant. Rite of Committal will follow in New Hope Township Cemetery.
Visitation will be at Wilson MILLER Funeral Home on Tuesday from 2-8 pm. At 7:00 pm the rosary will be recited followed by a time of sharing memories of Barb.
For their wonderful assistance throughout her struggle with cancer, the family asks that condolence memorials be offered in Barb's name to Senior Services of Midland County.
