Algin V. Riggie, age 88 of Midland, died Thursday, January 20, 2011 at Colonial Villa. The son of the late George and Hazel (Bechtel) Riggie was born February 18, 1922 in Midland County where he was raised and educated. Algin had served in the US Army during WWII. On April 6, 1942 he married the former Betty Herman in Midland. After 65 years of marriage, Betty predeceased her husband on December 18, 2007.
Algin was employed as a foreman with the Dow Chemical Company for 41 years, retiring in 1981. He was a life member of Midland Centre Lodge #273 F. & A.M.,a life member of the Royal Arch where he served as High Priest, former member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Bay City, Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion Berryhill Post #165. Algin enjoyed bowling, golfing, hunting and fishing.
Mr. Riggie is survived by his sons, Harold (Sharon) Riggie, Michael (Beverly) Riggie all of Midland; daughter, Susan (Robert) Wirgau of Petoskey; grandchildren, Kelly Hawkins, Donna Riggie, Patina Maier, Amelinda Wirgau, B.J. Wirgau; great grandchildren, Buck Riggie, Shane Riggie, Tim Hawkins, Adam Hawkins, Allison Hawkins, Isabelle Maier, Augustus Maier; sisters, Beatrice Mapes, Ilene Starks and Constance Glynn all of Midland. In addition to his parents and wife, Algin was preceded in death by a grandson, Wayne Riggie.
Funeral services will take place 11:00 a.m. Monday January 24, 2011 from Wilson MILLER Funeral Home. Pastor David G. Mulder of Homer United Methodist Church will officiate. Interment will follow in Homer Twp. Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the U.S. Army Funeral Honors and the Midland Area Veterans. Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8:00 p.m. and on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Everyone is welcome to attended the Masonic Memorial Service 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be offered to MidMichigan Home Care (Hospice).
