Midland's old-timers recall Thomas Atkinson's funeral business which was located at 109 East Main Street. This business was purchased September 3, 1908 by Chester F. Wilson and his son, Z. Scott Wilson, operating under the name of C.F. Wilson and Son until the death of Chester F. Wilson on March 8, 1916. After operating out of an office location at the 109 East Main Street address for a few years, Scott Wilson moved the business to the corner of Ashman and Larkin. On February 1, 1917, Scott Wilson moved the business to 240 West Main Street, where he opened Midland's first funeral home where funeral services could be held. This location had been the private residence and office of Dr. J.H. Johnson, M.D. On August 15, 1987, the business was relocated to 4210 North Saginaw Road in a newly constructed facility designed purposely for funeral service. After attending the Midland schools, Scott Wilson went to Evart, Michigan in 1903 to serve his apprenticeship under his uncle, George B. Wilson, who operated a funeral business.
Scott was first licensed as an Embalmer on December 5, 1907 and returned to Midland to found the present business on September 3, 1908. This business operated as a single proprietorship until June of 1950 when a partnership was set up between Scott Wilson and Robert E. Wilson. During the early years and through to her death in September of 1980, Sara I. Wilson played an important part in the success of the Wilson Funeral Home. Sara I. Schuman married Scott Wilson July 5, 1911 in Midland. Following the death of Scott Wilson on October 3, 1953, the business was set up as a partnership between Robert E. Wilson and Sara I. Wilson. On January 1, 1961, Sara I. Wilson sold her interest to her son Robert E. Wilson. He remained the sole proprietor until August 15, 1987 when the Wilson MILLER Funeral Home, Inc. was formed. Kyran J. Miller became the sole share holder of the new corporation. At the time of his death, our founder, Scott Wilson, had spent fifty years in funeral service - forty five of which were in the city of Midland.
On June 6th, 2016 long time employee Craig C. Pickelman bought the business from Ky Miller and is now the full sole proprietor of the funeral home. The tradition of compassionate guidance through difficult times will continue as we have done for the last century.
